ABOUT SFURTI
Ministry of MSME has launched this scheme in the year 2005 with the view to make the traditional industries more competitive, market driven, productive, profitable and capable of providing sustainable employment for traditional industry artisans and rural entrepreneurs. The Centre of Technology is the Implementing Agency for the implementation of the scheme. The scheme envisages for setting up of Common Facility Centres, Capacity building measures, Product development and design intervention centres and Market promotion assistance including setting up of outlets in the selected coir clusters.
Amethi traditionally has been an agrarian community. However with time, livelihood opportunities for minorities and service sector artisans have also arisen. In the proposed cluster the artisans are making handmade leather articles. They are using antiquated and traditional designs which are with time losing their marketability. There is also a lack of quality control and finish in the products which is again decreasing the product value. For example the soles produced by the artisans are handmade and do not fit in appropriately with the cluster produced footwear, thereby leading to a product with low quality and less grip. These kind of practical needs and an need for cluster mechanization has prompted the development of this leather based cluster.
